Effects of high temperature treatment on growth, dry matter production and net photosynthetic rate were investigated in four pepper varieties at three developmental growth stages. Seedling growth was considerably inhibited by temperatures above 40°C. Response of growth to high temperatures differed among the varieties. Growth and photosynthetic activity of the plants after planting, however, were not inhibited by the high-temperature treatment. Transpiration rate and stomatal conductance increased with the hightemperature treatment while the yields were considerably inhibited. There was a clear negative relationship between the vegetative and generative growth under high-temperature conditions. Increase in the fruit setting rate and acceleration of development resulted in the decrease of the plant growth level under high-temperature treatment. Transpiration ability ofC. annuumvariety was closely related to the high temperature tolerance. Flower abscission at a high temperature was considered to be a strategy to maintain a minimum level of plant growth. Varietal differences in the tolerance to high temperature ofC. annuumwere related to the plant ability to transpire and to the temperature when flower abscission occurres.
