The oxygen uptake and activities of iron-containing respiratory enzymes, including catalase, peroxidase and cytochrome oxidase, were compared between japonica and indica rice varieties, paddy and upland rice varieties and glutinous and nonglutinous rice varieties under two kinds of germination conditions, i.e. water blotted filter paper and immersion in water of 5 cm depth.
Oxygen uptake and activities of respiratory enzymes in anaerobic germination decreased in the following order (Table 6) :
Oxygen uptake: C.P.NG>T.P.NG≅J.U.NG>J.U.G≅J.P.NG>J.P.G
Catalase: T.P.NG>C.P.NG≅J.U.NG>J.U.G≅J.P.NG>J.P.G
Peroxidase: C.P.NG>T.P.NG≅J.U.NG>J.U.G≅J.P.NG>J.P.G
Cytochrome oxidase: C.P.NG≅T.P.NG≅J.U.NG>J.U.G≅J.P.NG>J.P.G
Based on the above-mentioned results, it was concluded that the decreased of the respiratory enzymes activity in rice seeds germinated anaerobically was similar to that of the oxygen uptake in all the cultivars.
The decrease in the activity of each enzyme under anaerobic conditions was greater in the indica rice varieties than in the japonica ones, in the upland rice varieties than in the paddy ones, and in the nonglutinous rice varieties than in the glutinous ones.
