The purpose of this study is to research the condition of rice growing in Lampung through the investigation of leaf area index, the permeability of light in the population, respiratory rate of roots and the classification of roots. An agro-ecological survey of rice growing of lowland field was made during dry season in the Province of Lampung, Indonesia, from Aug. 9th to Sept. 5th in 1981. The well-grown rice plants tend to branch roots up to the higher order branch. A high correlation is also found between the number of the second branched roots and the density of branched roots with the coefficient of r=0.89 and the equation of y=265, 4x+12.9. The amount of oxygen consumption varies among the varieties : Pelita shows large consumption, so Ketan of a local variety does, whereas Gajah Menur and Nyampah show small consumption as IR36 does. The population of IR36 has a sudden decrease of light at 30 cm stratum with only 7% light intensity on the surface of land. The population of Ketan has more light than that of IR36 with 14% light intensity on the surface of land in spite of the large LAI. Judging from the extinction coefficient of Ketan with 0.29 and that of IR36 with 0.43, the permeability of light is more efficient for Ketan.<BR>It is amazing to detect little root-rot in the rice plants in Lampung comparing with that of Japan. The authers suppose this is because the rice plants in Indonesia are grown under the deficiency of fertilizer application.
