Four buffalo heifers which were divided into two groups of three and one animals, respectively, were tethered or raised on pasture without supplementary concentrates for 11 months in order to analyse their liveweight gain and carcass composition. Growth in wither height, body length and chest girth during the tethering period was 11.2±1.2, 15.3±1.5, and 25.0 ±2.0 cm, respectively, and 10.2, 13.0 and 35.0 cm during the grazing period. Daily gain was 0.340±0.028 kg in the case of tethering and 0.465 kg when the animals were allowed to graze. Average dressing percentage, length of carcass, width of thigh, depth of loin, girth of thigh and rib eye area were 54.8±2. 0 %, 196.8±2. 6 cm, 30.1±1.3 cm, 21.4±0.9 cm, 86.2±1.3 cm and 18.2 ± 3.7 cm2, respectively. There was no variation in the number of thoracic, lumber, sacral and caudal vertebrae, which totalles 13, 6, 4 and 16, vertebrae, respectively. The evaluation of meat production in the water buffaloes used in this experiment is discussed.
