Germination tests of 27 species of Gramineae representing 25 genera in 12 tribes and 5 subfamilies were conducted over a temperature range varying from 37.5°to 6°C to study germination response in relation to phylogenetic classification.
Indices were calculated for each species based on their ability to germinate and their rate of germination at 6°C and 37.5°C.
The species fell into two groups, one of which germinated at 6°C within 30 days and did not germinate at 37.5°C and a second group which germinated at 37.5°but not at 6°C.
All species tested in the subfamily Festucoideae, one species of Oryzoideae and one of Arundinoideae fell into the low temperature group. The high temperature group included all species of Panicoideae and of Eragrostoideae, one species of Oryzoideae and one of Arundinoideae.
