The study was designed to examine the combined ototoxic effect of CDDP and electron beam, using guinea pigs. One group received physiological sodium chloride solution (4ml/kg/day), another group received CDDP (2mg/kg/day) and the electron beam (14Gy/day) was applied to both groups on the right temporal bone, continuosly for 5 days. After 21 days, hair cell damage of cochlea was observed under a phase contrast microscope using the surface preparation technique. Application of electron beam alone induced no hair cell damage, and CDDP induced slight damage to outer hair cells. However, combined administration of CDDP and electron beam showed severe ototoxic interaction.
