The superior vestibular nerve was observed histologically in the inferior nerve schwannoma removed surgically from 12 patients. Number, diameter and area of the vestibular nerve were counted. The relation between histological changes and functions in the superior vestibular nerve was examined. In 10 cases, the degrees of degeneration of myelinated nerve fibers were proportional to the reduced responses of the vestibular nerve. In most cases the myelinated nerve fibers decreased in number and showed some features of demyelination. Degeneration of the superior vestibular nerve might probably be caused by chronic compression of the schwannoma.
