The temporal bones in five irradiated cases of head and neck cancer, three cases of maxillary cancer and two cases of pharyngeal cancer, were studied histopathologically. Although the pathological changes of the external and middle ear were observed, there was no evidence of atrophy of the membranous labyrinth. The pathological findings of the external and middle ear was as follows: the inflammatory changes were seen in the skin of the external auditory canal and in the mucous membrane of the middle ear; the mastoid air cells and middle ear were filled with fluid and inflammatory cells; the mastoid bone was partly replaced by fibrous tissue. It was thought that the irradiation exerted no serious influence upon the inner ear in the cases of maxillary cancer and pharyngeal cancer.
