It is generally recognized that mucociliary transport system in the middle ear plays an important role in the clearance function. Wave motion of middle ear ciliated cell in guinea pigs was recorded by video system and analyzed by photo-electric method. Nonviable nontypable Haemophilus influenzae was inoculated into the tympanic bullae by transmeatal injection. Physiological saline was inoculated into the tympanic bullae to serve as control, and non-treated model was also served as control. Ciliary beats were suppressed only one day after inoculation of nonviable nontypable H. influenzae and it recovered two days after inoculation. We suppose that cellular damages and chemical mediators released by endotoxin may suppress the ciliary activity.
