We reviewed the alteration of ABRs and their morphological change of cochlear and brain tissue of guinea pigs under the experimental brain death state, monitoring arterial blood pressure, blood respiratory gas level, electrocardiography and rectal temperature. Evaluation of ABR was done with the % change of amplitude and peak latency of the third wave. Upon the waveforms of ABR, ECG and AP at the end of the experiment, we tried to divide specimens into four groups. However, there was no significant difference among those groups. SEM study on cochlea revealed tendencies that the group dead during the experiment showed degeneration of auditory hair and the groups regarded as the brain death state showed "bowing" strongly in the order of OHC 3rd line > OHC 2nd line > OHC 1st line > IHC and in the order of 2nd > 3rd > 4th > 1st turn. Optical microscopy on brain revealed massive intravascular congestion and edema especially in perivascular portion.
