The morphology of the stapedial nerve, especially its branching level from the facial nerve and its course toward the stapedial muscle were examined. Five human temporal bones from our collection were studied light microscopically.
Stapedial muscle located medial to the vertical portion of the facial nerve. Occasionally it is separated by fibrous connective tissue without complete bony partition.
The stapedial nerve branched off from the facial nerve on the inferior level of the pyramidal eminence. At this level, the diameters of the stapedial nerve and the facial nerve were, on the average 131 and 875μm respectively.
