The present study aims to show that air enters the perilymphatic space when middle ear pressure changes suddenly by the experiment with guinea pigs. Animals were classified into three groups. Pressure levels applied were 400 mmH2O, 650 mmH2O, and 900 mmH2O, respectively. Experiments revealed that air bubbles entered the perilymphatic space through the ruptured round window membrane without damaging the Corti's organ or the membranous labyrinth. Sudden elevation of middle ear pressure by artificial means caused air bubbles to enter in the scala tympani even at a pressure level of 400 mmH2O.
