Fiber connections between ipsilateral vestibular nuclei were examined in cats using retrograde transport of horseradish peroxidase (HRP). Under pentobarbital anesthesia, a glass-insulated silver wire microelectrode attached along a glass pipette filled with 5% HRP was inserted into superior, lateral, medial or descending vestibular nucleus. When the field potential was obtained with stimulation of the vestibular nerve located in the round window, HRP was iontophoretically applied to the recording site in doses of 200-500 nA for 2-5min. Under these procedures, the HRP application area was limited within 0.2-0.5mm in diameter within respective vestibular nucleus. The fiber connections between ipsilateral vestibular nuclei were observed from medial vestibular nucleus to descending, lateral and superior vestibular nuclei, from descending to lateral vestibular nucleus and from latetal to superior vestibular nucleus.
