According to interviews with 19ALS patients, principal factors in decision making for ventilatory support were "don't want to be a burden", "fear of death or pain", "perspective on life and death", "resistance to mechanical ventilation", and "purpose of life". "Don't want to be a burden" does not mean only "placing a burden on family", but also involves issues of "autonomy" and "shame". Similarly, "resistance to mechanical ventilation" includes the issue of "self-image". Meaning of life depends deeply on how one takes "being-kept-alive state". Also, factors of various dimensions are involved in decision-making.
