THE CLINICAL RESULTS OF PULMONARY TUBERCULOSIS TREATED WITH PAS

In 176 cases of pulmonary tuberculosis treated with PAS at the National Hokkaido Sec-ond Sanatorium, following clinical effects were observed:1. In pulmonary tuberculosis best rsults were obtained in the exsudative type. In intestinal 6 tuberculosis the result was not as good as was expected.2. The effect of PAS was markedly good in cases in which PAS was used from three to six months.3. It is considered that more than 500 grams of PAS is to be needed in order to yield a go-od result.4. While the subjective symptoms were considerably improved, no marked improvement was shown by the roentgenography. No significant change was noted in the number of tuber-cle bacilli in sputum.5. The side effects of PAS were chiefly gastrointestinal symptoms. The symptoms appeared with in one week after using PAS in almost all the cases.6. The joint use of PAS and streptomycin was much more effective than PAS alone.7. By withdrawing the use of PAS the chief symptoms were found to be gradually decreased to the condition before the treatment.
