Changes of respiration, pulse and galvanic skin reflex were observed by application of a series of stimulations such as sudden clapping of hands, mental arithmetic, pin prick and threat of pinprick on 77 adults. These responses were simultaneously recorded by electrom-agnetic oscillograph using electrotachograph for pulse, and so called condensor method for galvanic skin reflex. In the evaluation of the results, respiratory rate was not measured fut the record of respiration can not fe omitted since there is a close relation between it and changepulse of rateThe response was considered as positive when the pulse rate differs more than 5 (as cnverted for one minute) between the average count for ten seconds before the application of the stimulation and the maximum count after the test. The amplitude of the galvanic skin reflex was not measured. However, it was considered positive when recognized by inspection after reflex test was made. Toh deal with the magnitude of the reflex by the condensor method is of no value.Following are the results of the study.1) Change in the pulse: of 77 tested 55 (71.4%) persons showed positive response by mental arithmetic. But the percentage of positive response by all the other stimulations was lower than 30%.2) The galvanic skin reflex generally gave such higher positive rate than others. For example the mental arithmetic test gave the highest positive with 81.8% and even in threat of pin prick test which showed the lowest gave 62.3% positive. From these results the galvanic skin reflex may be considered as more sensitive indicator of emotion than pulse rate. Mental arithmetic is the most effective stimulating agent as indicated by pulse and galvanic skin reflex.3) Although remarkable changes in pulse rate was often accompanied by changes of galvanic skin reflex this is not the rule. Therefore these two phenomena do not always react exactly alike in spite of both being sympathetic phenomena.
