Tuberculous patients are subject to circulatory disturbances such as intoxicative or mechanical embarrassment. For the purpose of clarifying the extent of the influence caused by extrapleural plombage with placetic balls on the circulatory function the changes in blood pressure and Ishida's cardiac contraction coefficient we determined before, during and after the operation, and comparison was made with the clinical course.1) Patients in whom the operation was indicated, showed a lower blood pressure as comp-ared with normal individuals of same age.2) During and after the operation, no marked decline in blood pressure was seen, and com-pared with thoracoplastic operation the extent of the decline was remarkably slight.3) In majority cases, the postoperative cardiac coefficient demonstrated a maximum level on the first to third day after operation, and after the third day, a gradual return to normal was noted.4) When the cardiac coefficient reaches a certain level which indicates a cardiac deterioration, a bad prognosis such as a spontaneous pneumolysis by postoperative hemorrhage may have to be considered.5) A comparative correlation between the postoperative cardiac coefficient and cardiac function was found present, and this cardiac coefficient may be regarded to a certain extent as an index in prognosing the clinical course.
