Usefulness of Measuring Serum Cardiac Troponin T in Cardiovascular Diseases.

It is important to detect cardiac injury rapidly and accurately because the mortality largely depends upon the occurrence of cardiac injury. By whole blood rapid assay for cardiac troponin T (TnT) and the level of serum TnT, reversible cardiac injury and cardiac damage due to minor infarction and necrosis can be detected and the occurrence of cardiac events can be stratified. It is now widely recommended to select TnT for the risk stratification of patients with acute coronary syndrome. Since TnT is the best indicative of minor cardiac injury, the diagnostic and prognostic value of TnT has been recently established in congestive heart failure, idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy, and myocarditis. In addition, TnT also predicts the diagnostic and prognostic value of patients with acute pulmonary embolism, septic shock, acute stroke, renal insufficiency etc. In this brief review, the usefulness of a rapid TnT assay and measurement of the level of serum TnT for the early diag nosis and risk stratification of cardiovascular diseases is summerised.
