A multi-institutional cooperative study, that was a comparison of long-term results of the replacement of three models of the valve prosthesis which had been implanted on aortic, mitral and tricuspid valve positions alone or double from November 1980 to March 1993 in the eight national hospitals in Japan was performed. Three hundred and twenty-two patients that consisted of 177 of the St Jude Medical (SJM) valve replacement (57 aortic, 101 mitral and 19 double aortic-mitral), 91 of the CarboMedics (CM) valve replacement (25, 55, 11) and 54 of the Carpentier-Edwards 2650/6650 (CE) valve replacement (25 aortic, 19 mitral and 10tricuspid) were compared with their motality and morbidity in every valve position respectively. Each valve position group of these prosthesis showed high actuarial survival rates, low complication rates and well improved degree of NYHA function class at 2-4 years after surgeries. Significant differences were seen in improved degree of NYHA function class after the AVR and MVR between the CM valve prosthesis and the others, and in actuarial free rates of all motality and mobidities after 2-4 years surgeries on mitral position between the CE valve prosthesis and the SJM valve prosthesis. Nine patients of the tricuspid replacement alone with the CE valve prosthesis showed 100% of actuarial survival rate and actuarial free rate of all morbidities at 64 months.
