We report here a patient with non-seasonal depression, who was successfully treated with bright light exposure.A 31-year-old man had a 3-year history of major depression. At the age of 27, he started to complain of psychomotor retardation and difficulty in falling asleep and arising. Though various kinds of antidepressants were administered, his depressive symptoms had not been improved till he was admitted to our hospital. An artificial bright light (>2500 lux) for 2 hours was given just after he woke up. The bright light administration improved depressive symptoms of the patient within a week.Bright light therapy has been reported to be effective in the seasonal affective disorder and circadian rhythm sleep disorders, but there was controversy on it's efficacy in non-seasonal depression. In this patient, bright light therapy rapidly improved depressive symptoms. The clinical characteristics of this case were marked psychomotor retardation and sleep phase delay. We postulate that there may be a subgroup of non-seasonal major depression improved by bright light therapy.
