• The laboratory data of 27 patients with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) were analyzed. While the mean level of hemoglobin of these patients were not different from that seen in those aplastic anemia (AA), the mean level of serum LDH was significantly higher in MDS, when compared to that seen in AA (P<0. 01). This observation indicates the presence of inf f ective erythropoiesis in patients with MDS. Relevance of apoptosis in erythroid progenitor cells and ineffective erythropoiesis is discussed.
