High Frequency of Hepatocellular Carcinoma Associated with Extrahepatic Primary Cancer.

Among 196 inpatients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) at National Kyusyu Cancer Center for five years from 1988 to 1992, 18 patients (9.2%) had one or two other maligna-ncies in the extrahepatic organs. Sixteen of the patients had double cancers and 2 had triple cancers. Synchronous cancer was found in 9 cases and metachronous cancer in 11 cases. The associated cancer was gastric cancer in 6 cases(30.0%), pharyngeal cancer in 4(20.0%), colorectal cancer in 3(15.0%), lung cancer in 2(10, 0%) and other cancers in five different organs in 5. Frequency of the patients with extrahepatic primary cancer among those with HCC was gradually increased from 6.4% to 20.8% for the five years. Five out of the above mentioned 18 patients passed away by May in 1993 and the cause of death was due to HCC. However, the tendency to increasing the number of HCC cases associated with extrahepatic primary cancer should be taken care of, as the survival rate of HCC patients having been higher than before.
