Ten patients with chronic severe atopic dermatitis were admitted to our hospital and treated with ordinary therapy without restriction of diet. The skin lesions were remarkbly improved or cleared in most patients. Three patients worsened temporarily after a short stay at home. Correlations between the clinical behavior and the levels of serum IgE (RIST), serum LDH and counts of eosinophils in peripheral blood were recognized.Factors contributing the improvement of atopic dermatitis may be as follows: 1) a relief from an emotional stress and interference by their mother, 2) a skin management by the specialists and 3) a regular inpatient life and well-balanced diet. The inpatient treatment may be one of the effective therapies for the severe recalcitrant atopic dermatitis.
