Fasting serum carotene and vitamin A values were simultaneously measured in our patients with liver and pancreatic diseases for evaluating their clinical significance. The serum carotene levels were decreased in chronic pancreatitis and malignant diseases including pancreatic cancer, while the serum vitamin A levels were decreased in chronic liver diseases and malignant diseases including hepatocellular carcinoma. There was a significant correlation between serum carotene and serum cholesterol levels. Significant relationships were also found between serum vitamin A levels and each value of serum cholesterol, serum albumin, ICG or hepaplastin test. Replacement of vitamin A normalized serum concentration of vitamin A in healthy controls who showed low serum vitamin A levels and in cases with chronic pancreatitis. However, we could not find any significant improvement in serum vitamin A levels by the replacement therapy in cases with chronic liver diseases. From these results, it is considered to be useful to check both serum carotene and vitamin A levels for differentiating liver diseases from pancreatic diseases and understanding their pathophysiology.
