Benign pleural mesothelioma is a relatively uncommon disease. Surgical resection is usually recommended. We encountered a case of localized mesothelioma. The patient was a 58-year-old woman. She had been asymptomatic and the tumor was discovered by a routine chest X-ray film.Thoracotomy with local resection of the tumor was applied after several roentogenological examinations. The tumor was attached to the pleura by a pedicle. The resected tumor was a firm, lobulated mass with a smooth surface.Microscopic findings showed that the tumor consisted of spindle-shaped cells and dense collagen bundles. It was diagnosed as localized fibrous mesothelioma. In order to differentiate whether the tumor was originated from a visceral or a parietal pleura, it was useful in our case that the position of the mass shadow changed with breathing.Generally, this tumor is considered to be benign based on its histological findings, however, a few cases of recurrence have been reported. So the tumors must be removed together with a rim of surrounding pleura and lung tissue. And periodical observation is required after the operation.
