Five operated cases of localized mesothelioma of the pleura.

We report 5 cases of localized pleural mesothelioma (three; malignant, two; benign, ). The age of the patient ranged from 29 to 74 years, three were male and two were female. A history of exposure to asbest could not be demonstrated. Two patient had pleuritic pain and hemoptysis; and the remainig three were asymptomatic. Clubbed finger, arthralgia were not present. Chest X-ray films showed an localized mass in all patients, and pleural effusion in two patients. Two were localized in the right pleura, 3 in the left, all tumor circumscribed mass in the pleura. One tumor was clearly peduncurated arising from the visceral pleura, 4 parietal pleura. All patients underwent thoracotomy and complete local resection. The size of the tumors varied widely from a 4 cm to a bulky neoplasm of 18cm in diameter. Capsula was smooth and glistening. Fragments of normal lung were not adherent to the mass in 3 cases. Two underwent chemotherapy and radiation therapy after the operation and one (a 43-year-old male patient) died with local recurrence and metastasis and pneumonia after 8 months. Postoperative course of 4 patients was good.
