A Historical background of the studies on the infections due to Mycobacterium avium-Mycobacterium intracellulare complex (M. avium complex), its bacteriological characteristics, and clinical features of the disease due to this organism were reviewed and described. It was found that the oldest literatures describing the disease due to nontu-berculous mycobacteria including the M. avium complex are those of W. Kruse (1893) and S. Pansini (1894) from Naples. They described cases of infection due to M. avium.
