Determination of Antiepileptic Drugs in Serum

The blood level of antiepileptic drugs is said to be influenced by individual disposition, transient intrinsic conditions and interactions of concomitant drugs. By knowing the blood level, preferable use of drugs in pharmacotherapy for epilepsy is appropriately performed and undesirable neuropsychiatric toxic symptoms are prevented, therefore the clinical significance in determining the drugs is appraised.Among recently advanced determination methods, we employed a gas chromatographic analysis by which the quantitative estimation of diphenylhydantoin and phenobarbital is simultaneously carried out. Applying our methods to an epileptic patient with intoxication to determine consecutively the blood level of two drugs and correlate the increase in drug level with the occurrence of symptoms.With respect to contemporary methods some of technological difflculties are pointed out. For routine practice standardization of the simplified determination method of antiepileptic drugs has to be established.
