X-Ray Findings of the Thoracic Aorta in Hypertension

To study the correlation between the severity of hypertension and X-ray findings of the thoracic aorta, measurement of various diameters of the thoracic aorta by Zdansky's method were applied on chest X-ray films of 194 hypertensioe and 89 normotensive cases and correlation of each measured items with various parameters of the severity of hypertension was calculated, using the electronic computer.Following conclusion from the present study was obtained:1. Aging is the most influencing factor to increase the diameter of the aorta, whereas the severity of hypertension has slight influence upon it.2. Increasing the age, there was a tendency of increasing of the transverse diameter (B) of the aorta.3. There was moderate correlation between transverse diameter (B) of tie aorta and the level of the blood pressure in the normotensive cases.4. There were moderate correlation between hight (H) and long diameter (O) of the aorta and levels of the diastolic and mean blood pressure in the hypertensive cases.5. Increasing the severity index of arteriosclerotic change of eye grounds, there was a moderate tendency of the increasing the transverse diameter (B) of the aorta.6. There were slight correlation between the various diameters and the blood cholesterol levels.
