Pre- and postoperative management of patient undergoing open cardiac surgery is very important. Therefore, it may be of value to report our experiences during past three years.Accurate diagnosis should be estadlished with every possible means. It is favourable to hava the patient entering the hospital at least one week prior to surgery. Any preoperative disorder of respiratory or circulatory system should be adepuately treated. The use of antibiotics before operation may be of value in preventing postoperative infections.Postoperative care; You must not overlook any change of the patients. Careful measurement and replacement of blood loss from the chest catheters is important, when bleeding is massive or persistent, thoracotomy should be performed without hesitation. We lost two patients for postoperative bleeding. Therefore, it is most important to confirm no bleeding and normal heart beat prior to the conclusion of the operation.Prevention of liver and renal disturbance is also important.Administration of sedatives are used when the patients complain of excessive pain after about 12 hours. One month after operation, the patients are well enough to leave the hospital, but they are advised to come to the hospital for periodic examinations.
