Possibility of epiphytic bryophytes and lichens as bioindicators of air pollution was examined by measuring their composition, coverage and frequency. The distribution and gradient of major primary pollutants (SO2 and NOx) were mapped on the basis of air pollution data obtained by telemeter system in Kanagawa Prefecture. Twenty study stations were selected along the gradient of NOx condition. In the station where NOx concentration was the lowest, the number of species of epiphytic bryophytes and lichens was showed the most abundant (18 species), and high Index of Atmospheric Purity (IAP) value (68.23). It was confirmed that number of species, coverage and IAP value of epiphytic bryophytes and lichens showed a tendency to decrease towards urban area polluted more.
