Seasonal changes in viable counts of methanogenic, anaerobic, and aerobic bacteria in rice paddy soils were investigated. The population levels of these bacteria were not significantly affected by the type of fertilizer applied . The number of methanogens detected was usually at the order of 105 MPN/g⋅d.w. during the cultivation period, but it usually decreased after the harvest of rice. The number of total anaerobic bacteria did not significantly change by seasons and was usually enumerated at the order of 106 CFU/g⋅d.w.. Aerobic bacteria were usually enumerated at the order of 107 CFU/g⋅d.w. throughout the year. Thus, the aerobic bacteria were considered to be the most dominant in the methanogenic bacterial ecosystem in rice paddy soil whether it was flooded or not. Patterns of vertical distribution of these bacteria in the plow layer of paddy soil were different from each other and the number of methanogens was the highest at the depth of 3-5 cm during the cultivation period. The population densities of all kinds bacteria were usually higher in the planting soil than in the non-planting soil.
