A mathematical model was developed to estimate monthly average concen-trations of 1, 4-dichlorobenzene (DCB) in the lower atmosphere and the surface soil layer of the east Kanagawa Prefecture. The estimated atmospheric concentration of DCB were found to be in reasonable agreement with the available monitoring data within a factor of 3. This agreement suggests that the mathematical model is suited for rapid analysis of the environmental fate of organic chemicals in local areas. The steady-state environmental fate of DCB in the east Kanagawa Prefec-ture is estimated as follows1) Most of DCB released to the atmosphere is removed by the horizontal advection and the upward diffusion.2) The diffusion is the main transfer process of DCB from the atmosphere to the soil layer.3) Most of DCB in the soil layer is removed by the volatilization to the atmosphere, and the contribution of the precipitation is small. From estimated annually average concentrations of DCB in the environ-ment of the area, the inhalation of the ambient air is assessed as the main exposure pathway of DCB to human.
