An increasing number of IS014001 certificates are being awarded in Japan . Previous studies focus on how certification contributes to the improvement of environmental performance . However, the market side of the effects is ignored in the literature . Certification might change companies' production processes as well as their environmental management and performance. Since productivity is an important factor in evaluating systems in an organization such as a company, the focus of this paper is to analyze productivity as a type of performance measurement . This study measures productivity in the Japanese paper and pulp industry using plant level data, and tests the effects of IS014001 certification on both market and environmental productivity, which is defined in Managi et al. (2005). The results find that certification has positive effects on both types of productivity. The empirical feasibility of a 'win-win' outcome for economy and environment is confirmed in this study.
