A deposit-refund system often causes suppliers to worry over decreasing sales due to the increase in the product price with the added deposit cost. Such a system can also increase demand for the products easier to collect, as the system promotes the collection of the used products. In this paper, we analyze empirically the effect the implementation of a deposit-refund system has on the demand, using beer consumption in the United States, with the data broken down by container-type and State. Our results indicate that: 1) Total demand for products using a deposit-refund system decreases; 2) demand shifts toward easier-to-collect products; and 3) there is no effect on demand for commercial-scale utility customers such as restaurants.
