Landscape of rice terraces is one of the most attractive view for almost all Japanese people. In this paper, the economic loss of landscape degradation in rice terraces caused from cultivation abandonment or land consolidation is evaluated by attribute-based method (ABM) . Our study focuses on Obasute rice terraces in Nagano prefecture and Sakaori rice terraces in Gifu prefecture. It is critically important to decide what is the landscape degradation in these paddy fields . But it is not trivial. Therefore, we show five pictures to the respondents that illustrates the different levels of landscape degradation caused from cultivation abandonment. And we also show five pictures of landscape degradation caused from land consolidation. The economic losses of these landscape degradation are evaluated respectively. The following results are obtained. Firstly, the economic loss are not getting bigger as the larger abandoned are is. On the economic value of rice terraces landscape, it is important whether it changed or not. Secondly, the structures of preference for the rice terraces landscape are similar among people living in the neighbor, the local city, the metropolitan city. Moreover, they are little different between Obaste and Sakaori rice terraces. Thirdly, the knowledge of rice terraces affects evaluation, which means that how to supply the information to the respondent is important .
