The water quality of the Yellow and the Yangtze Rivers was compared in order to collect fundamental data of their water quality prior to the dramatic environmental changes caused by the construction of the Three Gorges Dam in the Yangtze River and water canals from the Yangtze to the Yellow River. Water samples were collected from 1998 to 2001 not only from the main streams of both rivers, but also from tributaries, agricultural drainages and wells. Because of its smaller water flow, the Yellow River had higher concentrations of Na, Mg, Cl-, and SO42-, together with high electric conductivity (EC) values, mainly due to inflow of the agricultural drainages from the salt-affected farmland that is vastly developed around the river. Furthermore, high values of suspended solid (SS) were observed in both rivers, indicating the outflow of large amounts of soils to the sea.
