The air pollution in Beijing becomes very severe problem along with the continuous economic growth. Especially in a heating season, the air-pollution concentration becomes 4 or more times than that of other seasons. So, it is more important and urgent than ever before to improve the conditions of Beijing's atmosphere. Developing district heating has been considered as an efficient way and it is expected that with the spread of district heating utilization, problem of air pollution can be mitigated. This study estimated the amount of coal consumed and SO2 discharged by space heating in 1999. According to the investigation, it is found out that the amount of coal was 1, 645, 000 ton by district heating, and 5, 050, 000 ton by individual heating and total amount was 6, 695, 000 ton. Moreover, the amount of SO2 discharge is evaluated to be 7, 100 ton by district heating, and 53, 700 ton by individual heating and sum total of 60, 800 ton by space heating. The SO2 discharge has taken 21.7 % of the total discharge amount of Beijing by space heating.
