Reproductive Ability in Rats with Different Genotypes of 6-Phosphogluconate Dehydrogenase Isozyme.

Concerning female reproductive ability, comparisons were made between strains A and C of Wistar rats with different genotypes of 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase isozyme. The mean litter size and a standard deviation was 9.5±2.8 for strain A, which was signficantly less compared to 11.2±1.1 for strain C (P<0.05). Autopsy performed on day 21 of pregnancy revealed that the number of corpora lutea was significantly greater in the in- and cross-bred strain A than in the in-and cross-bred strain C (P<0.05), whereas no significant differences in the number of implantation sites were apparent between the two strains. The number of alive fetuses on day 21 of pregnancy for the in- and cross-bred strain A was significantly greater compared to the number for the in- and cross-bred strain C (P<0.05). These findings suggest a significant difference in the number of ova released at ovulation, and in the fertilization rate and/or the early embryonic death, between the strains A and C, and the smaller litter size in the strain A might be due to cannibalism.
