The effect of Prostaglandin F<SUB>2α</SUB> by intracervical injection to induce estrus in cows with persistent corpus luteum was investigated.<BR>Fourty anestrous Holstein-Friesian cows were divided into two groups. In group I (6 cows) and in group II (34 cows), 1 mg and 2 mg PGF<SUB>2α</SUB> dissolved in phosphate buffer solution were injected intracervically by Higaki's ovarian injector, respectively.<BR>Regression of corpus luteum and development of follicle in ovaries were examined by rectal palpa-tion, and estrous signs following the PGF<SUB>2α</SUB> injection were checked carefully by owners.<BR>In group I, regression of persistent corpus luteum and follicular development were observed in 4 out of 6 cows during 1 to 5 days after the treatment, but estrus occured in only 1 cow (16%).<BR>In group II, those findings were observed in 33 out of 34 cows during 2 to 11 days after the treatment. Estrus occured in 28 cows (82%), but in 8 cows out of them estrous signs were not recognized until 6 to 11 days after the treatment.<BR>In 3 cows of group I and 28 cows of group II, artificial inseminations were carried out within the induced estrus and conception was confirmed by rectal palpation, in 2 cows (66.6%) of group I and 16 cows (59.2%) of group II.<BR>These results indicate that the minimum effective dose of PGF<SUB>2α</SUB> to regress the corpus luteum and to induce estrus in cows with persistent corpus luteum was 2 mg, when it was administrated intracervically.
