Study on Artificial Pneumothorax in Pulmonary Tuberculosis:(4) Bilateral Pneumothorax

The present paper deals with the bilateral artificial pneumothorax in 128 cases of bilateral pulmonary tuberculosis at the National Sanatorium Muramatsu Seiranso for seven to eighteen years.Of the 128 cases, 62.5 per cent improved, 21.1 per cent unchanged and 9.4 per cent aggravated, in the radiological diagnosis. According to the radiological diagnosis, the results of bilateral pneumothorax were better than that of unilateral pneumothorax in bilateral pulmonary tuberculosis while the former were inferior to the latter in unilateral tuberculosis. Tests of tubercle bacilli in sputum became negative in 42, 1 per cent of the total cases.Late results by follow-up for seven to eighteen years were investigated: 29.7 per cent of the all cases were living, 9, 4 per cent were under medical treatment, 43.8 per cent died, and 8.6 per cent had thoracoplasty, and 86 per cent were not followed. In bilateral pulmonary tuberculosis, roentgenographic results of bilateral pneumothorax were better than that of unilateral pneumothorax, but late ressults and rate of disappearance of tubercle bacilli in sputum of bilateral pneumothorax were no better than that of unilateral pneumothorax.
