We evaluated the brainstem function in eleven handicapped children. They were divided into three groups; oral-fed patients (n=4), oral-fed patients with dysphagia (n=5) and tube-fed patients (n=2). Cranial CT (width of pons), brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEP) and blink reflex were evaluated in these patients.Altogether, there were no significant differences in the width of pons among the three groups, but the latency of BAEP and blink reflex were elongated in tube-fed patients, and V-wave of BAEP and R1 component of blink reflex were positively correlated. Thus, it is suggested that BAEP and blink reflex may indicate the ability of feeding of handicapped children.
