Successful treatment with vindesine and prednisolone(vds-p) combination therapy in a patient with chronic myelomonocytic leukemia in blast crisis.

A 78-year-old man was admitted to our hospital in October 1989 because of leukocytosis. On admission, hematological findings were as follows: erythrocyte count 346×104/μl, hemoglobin 9.2g/dl, platelet count 39.3×10/μl and leukocyte count 42300/μ4 with 10% monocytes and 5% myeloblasts.The results of bone marrow (BM) aspiration showed normocellularity with 13.2% myeloblasts and dysplasia of all three hematopoietic cell lines. Chromosomal study of peripheral blood demonstrated a normal karyotype (46 XY). A diagnosis of chronic myelomonocytic leukemia (CMMoL) was made.Three weeks after admission, the patient developed crisis with high fever and a left femoral tumor. He was treated with vindesine and prednisolone (VDS-P) combination therapy. Partial remission was obtained after one month of the treatment, and the patient is still alive.VDS-P therapy therefore appeares to be one of the available treatments for CMMoL.
