Sulfur element plays crucial roles not only in the global climate change but also in life, because atmospheric sulfate aerosols form cloud condensation nuclei, and sulfur-containing amino acids and coenzymes are essential components for biological activity. Based on the recent microbial and ecological studies, it is suggested that the microbial sulfur conversion is involved in the global sulfur circulation in the biosphere, since 1) microorganisms can utilize or convert diverse organosulfur compounds which plants and animals can not utilize, 2) microorganisms inhabit various environment, 3) the number of microorganisms is much larger than that of plants or animals. This review summarizes dynamics of sulfur element in the biosphere and recent ecological, biochemical, or genetic studies on microbial organosulfur metabolism.
