Soil profiles were examined in the plots receiving only chemical fertilizers (CF), only farmyard manure (400 t/ha/year)(FYM), and both chemical fertilizers and farmyard manure (40 t/ha/year)(CF+FYM) in Nagoya University Farm. In the A horizons, the application of farmyard manure decreased the solid phase and increased organic nitrogen content, suggesting the improvement of soil fertility. In soil water of the B horizons, nitrate concentration was higher than 10 mg/L that is the value of groundwater regulation, especially high in the plots receiving farmyard manure. Nitrogen uptake rates by crops (Melon, Cabbage, Sweet corn and Chinese cabbage) were lower in the plots receiving farmyard manure. Based on the results in soil profiles and amounts of infiltrate measured in a lysimeter, the distance of transportation of nitrate was estimated less than 1 m in depth in the plots of CF and CF+FYM during the one cropping season, on the other hand a little bit larger than 1 m in depth in the plot of FYM.
