Experimental Animal Study for the Sensory Innervation to the Superior, Middle Cervical and Stellate Ganglia

We investigated the distribution of the origin of the sensory neurons in the DRGs projecting to the cervical sympathetic ganglia; the superior cervical ganglion (SCG), middle cervical ganglion (MCG) and stellate ganglion (SG) were studied using the retrograde axonal transport of WGA-HRP in young dogs. We injected 2% WGA-HRP into each ganglion. After the perfusion and fixation, dorsal root ganglia (DRGs) were removed and were cut into 50μm sections. The sections were incubated with 3, 3′, 5, 5′-tetramethyl benzidine and 5% ammonium molybdate, followed by the section counterstain with neutral red. The labeled cells were counted under a light microscope.In the cases into the SCG injection, the labeled cells were mainly found in the C1 and C2 DRGs. After the injection to the MCG and SG, the labeled cells were mainly observed in the lower cervical DRGs and T2-T4 DRGs. The labeled cells were found in the ipsilateral side predominantly. It was considered that WGA-HRP was uptaken from both the nerve terminals and the passing fibers in the sympathetic ganglia.The sensory terminals in the sympathetic ganglia may be associated with the regulation of the sympathetic nervous system and they may also have the relation to the pain mechanism.
