The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of the treatment applied pumping manipulation technique to patients with persistent TMJ closed lock.A total of 36 temporomandibular joints (TMJ) in 31 patients (4 males and 27 females, aged 16 to 69) were classified according to their arthrographic findings, using staging criteria for internal derangements of TMJ proposed by Wilkes (1989). The joints were divided into three stages as follows: 2 joints in stage III, 23 joints in stage IV, and 11 joints in stage V.Correlation between therapeutic results and factors such as the stage, the locking duration, and the age and gender of patients were evaluated. There was no clear correlation between therapeutic results and the age and gender of the patient, and the locking duration did not influence the therapeutic results. The therapeutic results of the pumping manipulation technique were 64% in Stages III and IV and 55% in Stage V.This therapy was more effective for patients with no perforation of disc. These results suggested that the pumping manipulation technique may be useful for patients with persistent TMJ closed lock.
