The aim of this study was to clarify the relation between asymmetries of the bicondylar paths and the dentofacial morphology, using axiographic records, submental-vertical radiograms, and lateral and frontal cephalograms. The subjects were 31 non-orthodontically treated children and young adults, showing no clinical symptom of TMJ-dysfunctions.After taking the data from each subject, the differences of bicondylar paths were compared to the asymmetry parameters of the dentofacial morphology by using coefficients of correlation. The data used were the mandibular deviations on submental-vertical radiograms and on frontal cephalograms, the difference of horizontal condylar angle on both condyles and the anteroposterior position of condyles. The results were as follows:1: A positive correlation between the mandibular deviation on the frontal cephalogram and the submental-vertical radiogram was recognized (p<0.001).2: Significant correlations between the amount of mandibular deviation and the bilateral difference of horizontal condylar angle and condylar anteroposterior-position were shown.3: Both the mandibular deviation and the bilateral difference of horizontal condylar angle had significant correlations to the parameters of the bilateral difference of condyle paths. These findings indicated that both the horizontal condylar angles and the symmetry of both condyles appeared to be involved in the asymmetry of mandibular protrusive movement.
