It has been reported that various components of extracellular fluids protect tissue injury caused by active oxygen and free radicals. We investigated the scavenging effects of TMJ synovial fluids and the hyarulonic acid agent Artz® on the generation of active oxygens, that is, superoxide (O2.-) and hydroxyl radical (HO.).Samples were a mixture of synovial fluid and physiological saline, obtained by the irrigation of the superior joint compartment of TMJ patients. The scavenging effects of these samples and Artz® on both O2.- generation and HO. generation in vitro were measured by the ESR spin-trapping technique using DMPO as a spin trap. The results of this study were as follows:1) TMJ synovial fluid showed the scavenging effects on both O2.- and HO. generation.2) The synovial fluids obtained from patients with TMJ pain showed a higher value of scavenging activity than those from patients without pain.3) The scavenging effects of Artz® on HO. generation depend on the concentration of the hyarulonic acid. These findings suggested that active oxygens play an important role on the pathogenesis of TMJ arthrosis and that hyarulonic acid of TMJ synovial fluid is also responsible for the protection of TMJ tissue injury.
