Mandibular opening movement is performed by a combination of condylar rotation and anterior translation. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between condylar rotation and translation during opening movements in the case of anterior complete disk displacement without reduction (ADDw/oR) group in order to clarify whether or not these two components are adapted for functional condylar movement. ADDw/oR group has been evaluated with imaging techniques such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Twenty seven subjects without signs or symptoms of temporomandibular joint disorders (normal group) and 27 subjects with at least unilateral ADDw/oR group were examined regarding the amount of condylar rotation and translation and the relationship between these two moving components utilizing computerized axiographs. Our results show a linear relationship between condylar rotation and translation except for the final stage of the opening movements in the normal group. On the other hand, the opening movement in the ADDw/oR group started with translation movement predominantly, but the translation was inhibited during the middle stage of the opening movement. Furthermore, results indicated a linear relationship betweeen condylar rotation and translation during functional movement in the ADDw/oR group. It was concluded that condylar movement in the ADDw/oR group was adapted for functional movement stage of phonation and mastication.
